New Year’s Resolutions? Remove This One From Your List!
Weight Watchers, Atkins, Cabbage Soup, Jenny Craig, South Beach… oh, the list goes on and on. If there was a diet trend, you better believe I tried it. Honestly, I can’t even remember a time when I wasn’t on a mission to shrink myself…
Let’s take a little stroll down memory lane, shall we?
Picture this: fifth-grade me—yes, FIFTH GRADE—being handed my very first diet. Can we all just pause for a sec and collectively scream, “What the actual hell?!” Who thought it was a good idea to tell a 10-year-old her body was a project that needed fixing?
Thankfully, I had an epiphany (and probably a snack or two LMAO) in October 2018 and ditched diet culture for good. And let me tell you, it was one of the most freeing, life-changing, pop-the-confetti moments ever.
So when I stumbled across 10 Reasons Not To Focus On Weight In The New Year, I practically did a happy dance in my living room. Finally—someone gets it! Someone understands that our bodies are not the enemy.
A few of the reasons hit me right in the feels, so let me spill the tea:
- It likely won’t be different this time, and this is not your fault. Diets fail because they do not work sustainably over time.
- Your body is not a problem to be solved. It is your home and regarding it as separate, problematic, or disgusting can result in a type of detachment that interferes with your ability to hear its valuable messages to you.
Let me say that one more time for the people in the back:
YOUR BODY IS NOT A PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED!
Mic drop. Thank you, Hilary & Dana from Center for Body Trust (formerly Be Nourished), for preaching this truth. Can we make this into a neon sign and hang it everywhere?
So, if “lose weight” is sitting pretty on your New Year’s resolutions list again this year, I’ve got homework for you. Go read 10 Reasons Not To Focus On Weight In The New Year right now.
Like, seriously—grab a cup of coffee, curl up in your comfiest blanket, and let those words sink in. You—and your beautiful, not-a-problem body—deserve it.
